SELF CONTROL – THE ROOT OF SUCCESS
BHASKAR JYOTI BORAH
Success in life is dependent upon many factors. It
requires positive attitude, clear cut aim in life, chosen daily activities and
above all creation of habits that will lead a person towards success. But if we
analyze properly, even all the above mentioned requirements will fail to bring
you the desired success if you do not possess ‘self control’. Self control is
the root of success.
Our mind has
a tendency to wander. It is like a jumping monkey. It is needed to be
controlled time and again and brought to be back to the work in hand. This
capacity to bring back our mind again and again to the desired work or matter
of attention, we can define as self control. People use to speak many things;
they used to give promises and set new goals to achieve. But to fulfil all
those they need to take actions. Many people start ventures to do something.
But they cannot persist. And persistence can only be resorted to by people who
are self controlled. Without self control you can’t stick to anything for a
longer duration. If you do not remain in the battle, you can’t win it.
Therefore self control is the root of all success.
Once a
research was conducted by a teacher on a group of children. The teacher called
the children one by one to a room. He had given each of them a chocolate with a
condition that he is going out from the room for a work for five minutes. If
the children can wait for five minutes to eat the chocolate then he will give
them another one. However the first chocolate will remain with them. It was a
matter of tremendous self control for them. Many of the children could not even
had the patience to wait for five minutes and had eaten the first chocolate.
But there were some children who patiently waited, although in between they
even thought of eating the chocolate, they motivated themselves that if they
wait for another five minutes they will get another chocolate. The teacher used
to come back after five minutes and gave them the second chocolate. It was seen
that the children who could control themselves for that ‘five minutes’ become
more successful in their lives than the other group who had eaten chocolate
impatiently before the ‘five minutes’.
To attain
self control, you need to free yourself from all distractions. You cannot run
after temporary pleasure and happiness if you want to achieve permanent success
in life. This is the spirituality of success. We have to understand these laws
of success properly because the violation of these laws will lead to disaster
in our lives.
Unless and until we learn to seek pleasure in our
devoted work, we can’t remain self controlled. We have to love our work, our
profession to prosper. That is the reason that we must choose our aim in life
very carefully. This is the only decision in life that makes our life
meaningful. Our aim determines the quality of our life. To achieve our aim in
life the most worthy weapon is Self-control. Self control to practice
persistence. Self control to stick to your goal or aim in life. Self control to
never give up and remain focused. Therefore it is only self control that leads
yourself to your goal or aim in life.
Self control necessitates
the following:
1. Strict
discipline in terms of a daily routine and principles:
Self control need to be practiced every day. To
practice self control and to remain focused you need a daily routine. Whatever
happens during the course of a day you must practice to withdraw yourself from
any situation and put yourself sincerely to your work. This is the first and
the foremost important lesson. Moreover along with your daily routine you also
need to fix your principles that you need to follow to reach your goal. You
also need to become flexible. Take break from the daily routine once a week or
when any real urgency arises.
2. Personal
Integrity :
Personal Integrity means living up to your values and
expectations. Following what you decide for yourself earnestly. Not changing
your goals in the meetings of adversities. Sticking yourself to your goal with
your principles is what is called personal integrity. It requires tremendous
self control. Every day will bring new challenges to you. Challenges you will
face in the form of distraction, in the form of negativity to change your goal
and personal values. The most important challenge is in the form of self
doubts. Doubts relating to your capacity to realize your goal. All these will
time and again distract you from your true path. Therefore self control is the
only potential weapon to remain focused to your goal.
3. Renunciation
of acts or pleasures contrary to your goal:
You must be able to sacrifice yourself to your goal.
You must be able to give up voluntarily which is not important for you or which
deviate you from reaching your goal. Renunciation of acts or pleasures contrary
to your goal aids your personal integrity and boosts your self control.
4. Controlling
the palate:
Food controls our temperament. More spicy, hot and
pungent food distracts our mind. You won’t be able to concentrate your mind for
a longer duration steadily. You will become angry and frustrated easily. You
will become victim of mood swing frequently. Let your values and virtues
determine your mood and personality. Food therefore is an important component
of self control. Choose your food wisely. Consult your dietician. Diet plays a
very important role in our body and mind.
5. Happy
and content mind:
To develop your self control you must be able to
maintain a happy and peaceful state of mind. Because a happy and a satisfied
mind only can think properly. If you are always unhappy, you will become
addicted to unhappiness. Addiction to unhappiness is a very deadly symptom. If
nothing can satisfy you then there is a problem. Try to control yourself.
Practice happiness. Practice love. Never feel unsecured. Rely on your daily
routine and activities. Surrender yourself to your goal, to love, to happy and
harmonious relationship. Practice singing a song, playing music or dancing with
a tune. Happiness is found not at the end of the journey. It is experienced
during a journey. Do not live in the future. Your desired future will
automatically come to you, if you follow your daily routine and practices
earnestly. Therefore be happy and content. Unhappiness will give rise to
frustrations. Your mind will be out of your control. But when you are happy and
satisfied, you are fulfilled. When you are fulfilled you can control yourself
easily.
6. Devotion
to the work in hand:
Nothing is perhaps as important as devotion to the
work in hand. It is only due to work that we all survive. Without work we can’t
survive. It is work that elevates us. It is work that makes us realize our true
potential. It is work that develops faith in us. It is work that makes us happy
and free. No freedom can be enjoyed without work. Such is the beauty of work.
It is work that determines our future. Therefore devotion to work is very
essential for us. When we give our 100% to any work, we get 100% of the result.
As we sow, so we reap. No meditation is required if we learn to engage
ourselves in work with single minded devotion. But the only important thing is
that you have to do what you love to do. Now-a-days there are many right people
in the wrong profession. Ultimately they waste their life in frustration. They
even do not have the courage to give up that profession for the sake of doing
what they love. They feel unsecured. But the fact is that although financially
you may prosper by engaging in a work that you do not love, but spiritually you
will despair. Choose the work you love, make it your profession, devote
yourself truly without bothering about the result. Your life will become
meaningful.
7. Living
in the present without worry for the future:
Living in the present means making ourselves free from
the unnecessary worries of the future. Worry of the future always obstructs our
work. We are engaging ourselves in a work but we are doubtful regarding the
outcome of the work. While working we are continuously thinking only about the
result which we are going to achieve or realize somewhere in the future. In
that case we are draining out our energy to focus on the work. We must have
faith in ourselves and also faith in the work that we do. The work if properly
done will give you the desired result. But without concentrating in the work we
are worrying about the result. This hinders the process of self control. If you
constantly worry about the future, you will not be able to control yourself.
This is very very important to understand.
8. Controlling
anger and greed:
A greedy mind is a diseased mind. There may be short
term accomplishment, but long term failure with a diseased mind. Control the
greed. Be generous. As Mahatma Gandhi said, the whole world is not even enough
for man’s greed. Greed when not gratified gives birth to anger. Anger when
surmounts bring disaster. A greedy and angry person can’t have self control.
Without self control man can’t become the maker of his destiny.
9. Unite
yourself with your aim or mission in life:
Self control is not an end in itself. It is a means.
It is a means to create your destiny. Without an aim or mission in life,
controlling your self will be without any direction and purpose. Therefore
unite yourself with an aim or mission. Have purpose in life. Exert self control
and create your destiny.
Without self-control neither destiny can be created
nor can self-confidence
be developed. Self-control only ensures that you have the capability to work in
the right direction. It is self-control that will allow you to follow your dreams
and desires. Fixity of goals, bull like tenacity and determination to achieve
your goals backed by self-control to focus on only your goals can invariably
lead you to your destiny.
