A
career allows us to be engaged in an occupation of our choice. Every occupation
requires certain educational and professional qualifications. One can succeed
in a particular occupation only when the abilities, aptitudes, interest and
also the personality required for that occupation are possessed by him.
Therefore right selection of career is very important. Whereas right selection
of career will lead to happiness, fulfilment and success, on the other hand wrong
selection of career will lead to unhappiness, discontentment and failure. Take
up a career which is best suited and that is the only way to prosper in life.
Here I am going to write about how to select the right career and become
successful in life to the level of our dreams.
SELF ANALYSIS TO CHOOSE YOUR CAREER:
Choosing of your career is not something that can be done in a moment, in a day or even in a week. It may take time, sometimes even years to decide the right career. Therefore while deciding your career you have to analyze yourself. You have to analyze your personality; your wants, desires or dreams that you want to fulfil in your life and finally you have to decide your career all by yourself. But however relating to the various career opportunities and their scopes, you can consult a career counsellor. Here I want to sum up the most important points as I feel, to decide one’s career in life. The key ideas of this writing I have borrowed from “How to select your Career” by Uttam Dave. I also would like to request all the readers to go through the book “First Things First” by Stephen R. Covey to get the knowledge regarding finding out your preferences in life and becoming a successful person. Both the books will be immensely helpful to you in choosing your career and achieving your goals in life.

Now take few
minutes of time and try to write down the answers of all the questions in each
of the following heads to find out what career you want to choose.
1. YOUR PERSONALITY:
To select
your career, first you have to know yourself. You have to know what type of
person you are and what your personality traits are. To find out answer the
following questions:
What do you
love doing the most?
What do you
day dream?
What are the
things that you don’t want to let it happen in your life?
What are
your strengths?
What are
your weaknesses?
What
qualities of Character do you admire in others?
Do you
accept challenges or run away from them?
2. DESIRED LIFESTYLE:
You also
should have a vision of your desired lifestyle. What type of lifestyle do you
want and what is your desired standard of living to make a happy and complete
living that you have to know and decide by yourself. Now answer the following
questions:
What working
conditions do you prefer?
Where will
you love to work – in urban areas, villages or in the cities?
What type of
house do you want to live in?
What type of
transportation do you prefer?
What
entertainment, recreation or vacation you want and how frequently?
How many
hours you want to work on a daily basis?
3. YOUR CAREER DECISION:
Before
taking your career decision you have to know the career options and to find out
the career which is most suitable to you. Some of the career options I am
listing here which are basically meant for only students of Humanities:

opportunities. However this list is not full and final. Find out career options as per your own
requirements from other sources. )
Now answer these questions to find out your career
decision:
What are the
goals you want to achieve in your life?
What are
your preferences?
What are
your mental needs and capacities?
If you had
unlimited time and resources, what would you choose to do?
What
resources do you have to achieve your goals?
What time
limit you want to fix to achieve your goals?
After
answering all these questions in written form, try to understand them. Perhaps
you might be able to discover certain new things about you. Don’t underestimate
your preferences and values. Understand and evaluate your preferences or
options. Which preferences do you consider as the most important one? Don’t
leave any room for repentance later on. Decide your career consciously and
wholeheartedly.
And finally
you will come to know your decision about the choice of your career. This is
your fundamental step for a successful life. While choosing our career we
always have to remember the famous quote of Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, “Small aim is
a crime.” We should not lower our standard to make our goals easier to achieve.
But I would like to conclude as said by Swami Vivekananda, “You have to upgrade
yourself to the level of your goal.” Go ahead in your life by choosing your career wisely. All the Best!
