Time Management

“The Key is in not spending time,
but in investing it.” – Stephen R. Covey
Time
constitutes life. Life is nothing but time in miniature. Wasting of time is
therefore equivalent to wasting a life. Those who learnt the art of time management can
master any other skill. Who understands the value of time understands the value
of everything. On the other hand, a person who can’t understand the value of
time will never understand the value of life. Therefore life management is
equivalent to time management. In this blog, I am going to write about seven
very effective habits by acquiring which you can master time management.
1.
Prioritize
Your Activities:
Time
Management requires systematic and organized efforts. It requires proper
planning and execution of activities to be undertaken. You can manage your time
well when you have a clear picture of the work need to be done. Therefore
before starting any venture take your time to do the necessary research - to
plan and prioritize your activities. Organized and prioritized activities will
save lots of your time from wasting it for nothing. Please remember it is
equally important to prioritize activities not only for the month or week but
also for the day.
2.
See
the Whole Picture:
When
you see things locally or in parts, you miss the whole picture. Everything is
interconnected. There should be a proper link between or among your activities
undertaken. You can connect the dots only when you develop your abilities to
see things in system. System thinking and also acting in systems is very vital
for your success. If there is no correlation between what you do today and what
you did yesterday, you are not a system thinker and you are wasting your precious time in ambiguity. You need to determine your
goals clearly and develop proper strategies and execute them to become a system
thinker. You must develop abilities to sacrifice all other things that comes on
the way towards the achievement of your goals.
3.
Organize
Yourself:
Time
Management prerequisites organized efforts. When efforts are well organized, it
not only saves time but also energy and money. You need to discipline yourself
to undertake your prioritized activities on time. You need to develop the
ability to sacrifice any other thing that may seem to you quite interesting but
never serve the purpose of reaching your goal. My best suggestion to organize
yourself is to follow a daily routine with your daily prioritized activities. A
Daily Routine will ensure proper time management and empowers you to become
more disciplined and self-controlled to come closer to your goals on a daily
basis.
4.
Maintain
a Checklist:
A
Checklist of the prioritized activities saves lots of time. You can prepare a daily Checklist of
activities, a weekly or monthly activities or even a Checklist that contains
the Milestone Activities. A Checklist will help you to always remain in focus.
It will help you to eliminate distractions from your life. You can even view
your checklist as a roadmap towards your goals.
5.
Plan
Ahead:
Try
to foresee the things. Develop the ability to see the future in the area of
your Career, Profession or Business. You need to plan things in advance and
execute as early as possible. Early bird catches the worms. For that you need
to keep yourself updated and informed properly and continuously. Proper Information
Flow is vital for effective time management. Delay in the process of receiving
information may lead to not only shortage of time but also to wastage of time
and will create chaos in your life. Therefore, plan ahead the things by keeping
‘open’ the sources of information flow to you.
6.
Be
Result Oriented:
Recognizing the right activities are very important to produce the right results. If
your activities are not leading you to the results you want then you will have
to change them. Never waste your time on repeating those tasks that do not
produce the results you desire. Recognizing the right activities are as
much important as finding and determining your goals. By repeating the same
works and by remaining in the same mindset, you can’t expect different results.
You need not only to recognize and prioritize your activities but also undertake them
correctly. Right activities which are also undertaken rightly will only produce
desired results.
7.
Execute
Your Plan:
When
you have designed any planning properly to achieve any particular goal, you
must also develop the habit of following it. You must execute the plan exactly. This is the most effective Time Management habit as only following your
properly developed plan will eliminate wasting your precious time
unnecessarily. This is the greatest Secret. The most difficult part of the game
of time management or even life management is obedience or adherence to the
plan, process and the principles. It is here that many people fail. People use
to view discipline as bondage and refrain from practicing it. People hate even
monotony. But the real fact is that freedom lies in adhering to your
consciously determined plan or strategy, which will lead to the achievement of
your goals.
